SaM Solutions specialists tuned OS Linux for running on Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC)
SaM Solutions is the first IT outsourcing company that provided the full-fledged operation of Linux applications on the Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC). SAMSUNG Q1 device was used as the target hardware.
At the moment UMPC can be considered a device occupying an intermediate position between a Tablet PC and an ordinary Pocket PC. A favorable distinction of the device from an ordinary Pocket PC is that it runs standard Windows-based software, while being much more compact and lightweight than a notebook.
The majority of current UMPCs already available in the market work mainly under Windows XP Tablet PC Edition with the preinstalled Microsoft Touch Pack utilities aimed at facilitating the operations with touch screen. Some UMPC producers have recently announced the next generation hardware running Windows Vista. However despite the fact that UMPC 2006 specifications imply these devices running Windows as well as Linux OS, there was hardly any Linux-based Ultra-Mobile PC with the corresponding applications in the European market until now.
SaM Solutions Linux experts optimized Debian GNU/Linux (Etch version) to provide full support of applications on UMPC platform and use of all UMPC control elements and communication means. Thus SaM Solutions has further widened the list of hardware platforms supported by Linux operating system.
A central feature of an UMPC is its advanced touch screen. It can be used also as a virtual keyboard divided into two parts located in the bottom corners of the screen providing the user with the opportunity to type text using both hands. All UMPC devices are equipped with a wireless interface such as for instance Bluetooth or Wi-Fi module, hardware support of OpenGL allowing working with 3D graphics, and many other technical opportunities. Linux users can also take advantage of various open source applications: office applications, graphics editors, multimedia-players, etc.
SaM Solutions specialists enabled all features of Ultra-Mobile PCs under Linux: advanced technical innovations typical for UMPCs featuring OS Windows XP Tablet PC Edition work just as perfectly controlled by Debian GNU/Linux.
